A day with Greg Grainger from ABC Travel Oz........

The kids enjoyed sitting around the campfire and riding their horses infront of the cameras for a day off school to learn about filming. The kids in their natural surrounds were still a little shy with cameras but enjoyed the whole experience. It was great to see the finale cut go to air on ABC Travel Oz in September 2010.

Come along for the ride
A couple will share their love of the high country on a four-day public cattle drive, Kim Woods reports
Waking up to views of Mt Kosciuszko is an everyday occurance for Mal and Belinda McKimmie. So, too, is tailing a mob of cattle through stunning alpine scenery. Mal has spent years mustering cattle on alpine leases for the Upper Murray stations of Ardenside and Tom Groggin. Beef producer, stockman, casual milker and whip-maker, Mal is determined to keep the high country's cultural heritage alive.
So he and Belinda have organised the first public cattle drive across four days that follow historic droving routes below the snowline.
The cattle drive will leave their property, Bar M, near Corryong on March 28, traversing the Biggara, Thougla and Bunroy valleys. Riders will drive about 40 dry stock along tracks and ridges boasting breathtaking views of the Snowy Mountains.
'We will ride through forests of blue gum, peppermint and white gum below the snowline and have views of Kosciuszko, Mt Townsend, Pinnibar and the Abbott ranges,' Belinda says. 'It is awesome country up here, people really enjoy it. 'We had 1370mm of rain last year and the wildflowers have returned after the drought.'
A few years ago, riding a horse after cattle was the furthest thing from Mal's mind. He was severely injured during a landslip while working on a rail line near Cairns. Worn down by drought, the couple had leased out their Corryong cattle farm and moved north to seek work. The accident occurred within weeks of settling in Cairns.
When Mal was well enough to travel, the couple moved back to the Corryong farm so he could begin rehabilitation.
Before the accident, the third-generation Upper Murray farmer epitomised BanjoPaterson's The Man From Snowy River. So much so, he recreated' The Man' each year at Corryong's Man From Snowy River Bush Festival. Mounted on his bush-bred buckskin gelding, Mal would gallop a mob a brumbies down a steep hill and wheel them in front of a delighted crowd.
'After the accident we had to re-evaluate our lives and find out what Mal could cope with, 'Belinda says. The couple run 6o autumn calving beef breeders and agisted dairy heifers on the 242ha property, which has 61ha of remnant bush and borders state forest.
A year ago, they established Bar M Horseback Adventures, offering hourly, half and full day rides on old high country bridle paths. 'The cattle drive was a natural step for the trail riding and beef enterprise.' Belinda says.
Mal and Belinda plan to make it an annual event, coinciding with Corryong's bush festival.
'We want people to have a quality experience and keep our traditional horse and bush skills alive.' she says.
Averaging 15km a day, the cattle drive will consist of two nights on private property and one night in state forest.
It will finish in time for the four day Man From Snowy River Bush Festival.
